Considered by many to be one of the best new trumpet players on the New York scene, Greg Glassman, composer and bandleader, has performed and recorded with some of the most notable names in jazz, including Roswell Rudd, Eric Person, John Esposito, Frank Lacy and Wynton Marsalis. He is experienced in many types of Latin music, and toured Western Europe, Scandinavia, Russia and the Caribbean with the Skatalites, a band that infuses American bebop and R&B into ska and reggae music. His latest release Onward and Upward "is a cornucopia of mesmerizing tracks . . .a measure of excellence seldom seen by today's standards" (Sheldon Nunn, Jus' Jazz, Feb. 2003). Members of his quartet include pianist Dave Pier, bassist Danton Boller and drummer Quincy Davis.

Hart's musical influences range from Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin to Captain Beefheart. His debut album in 1996, Big Mama's Door, earned the 1997 Living Blues Critics Award "Best Debut Album of the Year." Its follow up, Territory, won Living Blues magazine's Critics Awards for "Best Traditional/Acoustic Blues Album" and "Best Blues Album of the Year," as well as Downbeat magazine's 1999 Critic Poll Award for "Best Blues Album." His third release, Start with the Soul, placed in the 2000 New York Times Critics Poll Winner Top 10 Albums of the Year and won the BBC Radio Blues Album of the Year. He is joined by Audley Freed and Robert Kearns (bass/vocals) and Ed Michaels (drums) in a group named after a character in the James Gang in the 70's western film, "Zachariah."

Out front of an all star band, Lavay Smith's sultry vocal style evokes the sensuous era of jazz queens Billy Holiday and Dinah Washington. The band first performed in 1989, and by 1991 won the San Francisco Weekly reader's poll in the "Best Blues Band" category. In 1997, the Red Hot Skillet Lickers won the prestigious "Bammie" award for "Outstanding Swing Band" of 1996. By 2000 Lavay had garnered a #10 on the Billboard Jazz Charts for her self-produced CD, "Everybody's Talking Bout Miss Thing," spending an unprecedented 20 consecutive weeks there. Readers of the two major newspapers in San Francisco, the Chronicle and the Examiner, voted Lavay Smith and Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers the best band in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1998.

"Rock flirts with funk"
This five piece band from Raleigh features Emma K. Davis on lead vocals, Olly Roberts on bass, acoustic guitar and vocals, Ken Weigand on rhythm guitar, bass and vocals, Mike Edwards on guitars and Dan Davis on drums. The band released their first self-titled album in 1998, followed by High Maintenance in June 2002. They have performed in clubs and festivals around the area, including a spot at the Alltel Pavilion to kick off the BB King Blues Festival in the fall of 2000.

Abe Reid won the 1998 International Blues Talent Competition in Memphis, opened the 1999 W.C. Handy Awards and was named Charlotte's best blues act for 2000 by Creative Loafing magazine. His musical styles mix Piedmont blues with Gershwin-type ragtime into an eclectic concoction of blues, jazz, ragtime and country rock. He is joined by Korey Dudley (upright bass, cello, guitar, flute, piano, clarinet, and drums) and Seth Kauffman (violin, guitar, mandolin, sitar and drums). Releases include Basicly Dumb in 1999, Dew Rags in 2000 and Blue Rags in 2001.

Non-traditional banjo music combines elements of high-energy jazz-fusion, rock, bluegrass, funk, Celtic, Indian and world music with improvisation. This Chapel Hill group (transplanted from Pennsylvania) has performed at festivals like the Brushy Mountain Jamboree and Camp Buzz in Ohio, as well as on the 2nd stage for Hank Williams Jr. and Phil Lesh at the Alltel Pavilion. The band features Ryan Cavanaugh on electric banjo, John Garris on acoustic guitar, world percussionist Chris Dougherty on congas, bongos, timbales and djembe, and Matt Deibert on drum set.
