Founded by the City of Raleigh Arts Commission in 1979, Artsplosure presented its first citywide arts festival in spring of 1980. Since then, the nonprofit, 501(C)(3) corporation has produced multiple events in numerous locations in North Carolina’s Capital City. Artsplosure festivals and programs consistently attract downtown Raleigh’s largest crowds. High quality, family friendly art in accessible locations draws 100,000 or more people to Raleigh’s central business district each year.
Artsplosure currently presents First Night Raleigh on New Year’s Eve, the Artsplosure Spring Arts Festival the third weekend in May, and an Arts Education and Outreach Program in conjunction with each festival.
First Night Raleigh presents an eclectic mix of more than 100 emerging and established visual and performing artists and arts groups in a 12-city block footprint encompassing up to 30 venues. Programming components include the afternoon Children’s Celebration at the state Museums of History and Natural Sciences, the People’s Procession, an early evening fireworks display, an outdoor Main Stage performances and the official Countdown to Midnight, featuring fireworks and the Raleigh Acorn Drop. First Night attendance averages 40,000 people.
The Artsplosure Spring Arts Festival offers a juried visual art show and marketplace, unique visual art installations, buskers, a middle and high school student art exhibit and awards, the Kidsplosure interactive children’s program area, and contemporary music performances, with an emphasis on jazz, blues, and world music on two stages. Spring programming partners include Exploris and the North Carolina Museum of Art outdoor theatre. Attendance averages 75,000 people.
Artsplosure’s Arts Education and Outreach Program is an important gateway to art awareness, appreciation, and participation for thousands of young people each year. Artsplosure’s arts education program features visual and performing artists and arts groups who are recognized locally and nationally for their talent and positive impact on children. To ensure that underserved and special needs children are able to attend First Night Raleigh, Artsplosure annually donates 1,300 to 1,500 admissions buttons to local youth and family service agencies.
Artsplosure’s vision is that all people will have access to a better quality of life and an enhanced cultural environment. Artsplosure’s mission is to improve the quality of life and cultural environment through high caliber annual events that:
| Celebrate excellence in the performing and visual arts. | ||
| Promote and recognize local, regional, and national artists. | ||
| Bring artists and the greater community together. |
