Art in the Park

Giant Bubble Wands
Sculptor Lou Horton will create a group of bubble wands out of steel and invite Artsplosure participants to come and make their own wands.  This interactive installation lets people enjoy not only making art and watching others make art, but also allows them to get involved and play! Horton attended the University of North Carolina at Asheville and now lives in Pittsboro.

Polyphemus Plexippus

This giant caterpillar puppet designed by Paperhand Puppet Intervention is a beautifully colored interactive sculpture that can be enjoyed by both viewers and participants alike. It will give viewers the sense that they themselves have shrunk down to the size of an ant and are looking up at the world from a tiny perspective. Adults and children will be invited to climb inside and become the legs and moving mandibles of the caterpillar. More than a dozen people at a time will be able to take it for a spin around the Artsplosure festival, creating a series of crawling, chewing, mini-parades throughout the day.

Paperhand Puppet Intervention is comprised of Donovan Zimmerman and Jan Burger, as well as dozens of artists.  Both Zimmerman and Burger are skilled puppeteers whose work has been highlighted in festivals throughout North Carolina. Past Artsplosure commissions have included "The Ancient Tree" for Artsplosure 2004 and First Night Raleigh's People's Procession centerpiece, "Rhea."

Chessworks
Challenge others to a game of life-size chess! The Moncure Chessworks was opened in 1998 by scrap metal sculptor, Lyle Estill. It is primarily a metal working shop, although Estill shares the space with other resident artists, who have worked in glass, fabric, cement, and a wide variety of other mediums.

Whimsical Windchimes

Enjoy the sounds of spring, as Paul Rolfe's windchimes announce the changes of the seasons.  Chime in, and make your own melodies as well.

Paul Rolfe was born in 1956 in Richmond, Virginia and currently resides in Raleigh, North Carolina. He started carving in 1974 while studying at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. By 1982, he was known professionally under the company name, Raleigh Carving Co. During his career, Paul has carved originals for commercially-cast reproductions, signs, portraits, statues and ecclesiastical furnishings for churches, awards, and antique furniture reproductions. He has taught traditional woodcarving techniques at City of Raleigh art centers, the NCSU Craft Center, and at Klingspor's Woodworking Shop locations across North Carolina. He has also taught carving at John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown NC. For the past 24 years Paul has exhibited and demonstrated at the Village of
Yesteryear at the North Carolina State Fair.

Sandy Feat
Watch Ed Moore and his team turn tons of sand into a work of art. He has taught sand sculpture classes at the NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores, won numerous sand sculpture contests at Virginia Beach, Atlantic Beach, Wrightsville Beach and Atlanta, participated in the World Championships in British Columbia and sculpted with master sand sculptors from Florida to California. Ed has been a sculptor most of his life. Working in clay, wood and metal, he developed a love and talent for three-dimensional art. Those interests expanded through his youth and turned into a career in architecture and he is now an owner of Moore + Burton Architects, PA in Raleigh, NC.
