Joel Martin's Jazzical is a celebration of creative fusion - it's the explosive union of classical composition and jazz innovation ignited with a fresh spirit all its own. Martin, Jazzical captures the dynamic force of multiple cultures and influences, unleashing a kinetic energy that breaks down boundaries and yields whole new worlds of musical expression.

Martin is an award-winning pianist who has performed his innovative Jazzical compositions as well as jazz and classical pieces both domestically and abroad. In 1990 he was a SONY Innovators Awards finalist for music and in 1992 received the Concert Artist Guild two-year Career Development Fellowship.

Throughout his prolific career Martin has performed with the New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony, Springfield Symphony (MA) and the Delaware Symphony. Javier Garcia
4:00 – 5:00
Media Sponsor: Univision 40 (WUVC)

At only 31 years old, Garcia is receiving rave reviews for his new CD entitled “13” and being praised for his “new progressive Latin-pop” sound, Garcia is being dubbed a new Latin star. He has loved music ever since he learned to play guitar at age 10. The family moved to Miami when he was 15 and he started making music there. Garcia sent his demo to only one person --
the award-winning producer Gustavo Santaolalla -- and got a record deal. In 1997 he released his first single, "Tranquila," which went gold in Latin America. He released 13 in 2005 to rapturous critical acclaim, thanks in large part to his joyful referencing of everything from Cuban son to dub to Afrobeat.

Garcia grew up in Spain, where his Cuban father painted and his Irish mother led the family on sing-alongs during road trips. Eventually Garcia developed his own sophisticated mixture of salsa, reggae, ska, calypso, and even flamenco. That's probably why his sound is more playful and pop-oriented than most of Miami's jam bands, who are heavily influenced by hip-hop.

Hubert Sumlin with the Nighthawks
6:00 – 7:15

One of the all-time great Blues Guitar players and winner of a Livin’ Blues Gold Award, Sumlin began his career playing with James Cotton before being drafted into Howlin’ Wolf’s band as lead guitarist in 1954. He played with Howlin’ Wolf for over 25 years until Wolf’s passing. During that time, he also served a stint as Muddy Waters’ lead guitarist. In that time he helped forge the sound of postwar blues and influenced a whole new generation of guitarists including Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page. Page said, “Hubert Sumlin is one important person…I love Hubert. And what a complement he was to Howlin’ Wolf’s voice. He always played the right thing at the right time. Perfect.” Rolling Stone recently included Sumlin
in their list of 100 Greatest Guitarists. Sumlin is featured in the new Martin Scorcese/Antoine Fuqua blues performance film, “Lightning In A Bottle”

Over the last 30+ years, The Nighthawks have earned a reputation as one of the best and hardest working bands around. They have gotten their widest acclaim for being one of the first and best white boy blues bands of their generation, and for putting on a great live show. But their acclaim and accomplishments go far beyond that. The Nighthawks have released over 20 albums and have toured the U.S., Canada, Europe and Japan. They have played over 200 shows a year for 20 of their years together. They continue to tour actively and put on an energetic live show that has featured the same lineup since 1995—Mark Wenner (vocals/harp), Pete Kanaras (guitar), Jan Zukowski (bass) and Pete Ragusa (drums).

Maxwell/Mosher Band
1:00 – 2:00

Maxwell/Mosher is Tom Maxwell and Ken Mosher, founding members of the Squirrel Nut Zippers and the primary songwriters for the group. "I don't think there's an instrument made that we don't like, or that we couldn't use," said Maxwell. Mosher said he has always wanted to try the oboe, and Maxwell is interested in the tabla, an Indian drum. "But you actually have to study for years -- and I'm not prepared to do that," he added.

The new record, said Maxwell, "continues the Zippers' musical narrative. 'Swing' never fit right as a description. I always believed that the Zippers were defined more by enthusiasm, romance, menace and raggedy authority. The Maxwell/Mosher record's got that in spades." New sounds on the CD include "a couple of synthesizers, accordion, autoharp and songs created over a percussion loop."

"Our songs on the record are a real connection between the classic songs and the modern works," said Mosher.

SNMNMNM
3:00 – 4:00

This indie-pop quartet from Chapel Hill, N.C., has a unique assortment of instruments: an analog synthesizer, some horns and a tuba in place of a bass guitar, all in addition to the requisite guitars and drums-and their infectious melodies and driving rhythms. SNMNMNM combines a sophisticated songwriting style which balances heavy doses of self-deprecating wit against walls of deceptively simple tonal bliss. Their standard set up is Seamus Kenney on vocals/accordion/trombone, Matthew Kenney on electric guitar/vocals/trumpet, Mark Daumen on
amplified tuba/vocals, and Matthew Vooris on drums/vocals.
